Golf in the Azores is shaped by volcanic landscapes, Atlantic light and a climate that can change quickly during a round. The main golfing options are on the larger islands, particularly São Miguel and Terceira, where courses combine undulating ground, exposed stretches and views towards the ocean or inland hills. Conditions are generally greener and softer than on mainland Portugal, while wind and passing showers can make club selection more important than distance alone. Fairways may feel remote, but the islands are compact enough for golf to sit comfortably alongside short drives and local dining. Plan tee times with flexibility, especially outside summer, and take a waterproof layer, windproof outer layer and shoes suited to damp ground. Mornings can be calmer, although weather varies by island and elevation. A rental car is the practical way to reach most courses and explore nearby viewpoints, thermal areas and coastal towns. If combining islands, allow extra time for inter-island travel rather than treating the archipelago as a single driveable destination. Spring through early autumn usually offers the most reliable balance of daylight and playing conditions; winter golf remains possible but is more exposed to rain and wind.
